Learn how to talk about something that is possible or prohibited

    A:  Скажите, во сколько открывается галерея?
    B:  В 11.
    A:  А сейчас который час?
    B:  Сейчас 10:45.
    A:  Хорошо, я подожду. Извините, здесь можно курить?
    B:  Нет, к сожалению, нельзя.
    A:  Один билет и буклет, пожалуйста.
    B:  300 рублей.
    A:  А внутри можно фотографировать?
    B:  Нет, фотографировать нельзя, но Вы можете приобрести у нас книгу о галерее на английском языке.
    A:  Спасибо.

нельзя you can’t, you mustn’t, it’s forbidden, it’s impossible / во сколько at what time / внутри inside / буклет booklet / галерея gallery /к сожалению unfortunately, I’m afraid / открываться to (be) open / приобрести / purchase

I. Permission, Prohibition, and Possibility

In the first part of this lesson, we’ll discuss the words можно, meaning “it is possible or permissible” and нельзя, meaning “it’s impossible or not permissible.”

We can use these two words to denote permission and prohibition.

For Example:

RUSSIANROMANIZATION“ENGLISH”
здесь можно курить?Zdes’ mozhno kurit’?“Is it okay to smoke here?”
нет, нельзя.Net, nel’zya.“No, it’s not.”
можно войти?Mozhno voiti?“Can I come in?”
да, можно.Da, mozhno.“Yes, you can.”

Note: We use these expressions with infinitives, so no person is required. We can add a person for the specification, but we should put it into the dative case.

For Example:

RUSSIANROMANIZATION“ENGLISH”
Мне нельзя курить.Mne nel’zya kurit’.“I am not allowed to (can’t, shouldn’t) smoke.”
Детям нельзя пить алкоголь.Detyam nel’zya pit’ alkogol’.“Children are not allowed to (can’t, shouldn’t) drink alcohol.”
Ему можно всё.     Emu mozhno vsyo.“He is allowed to (can) do anything.”

We can also use these two words to show possibility and impossibility.

For Example:

  1. Tam mozhno kupit’ bilety.
    Там можно купить билеты.
    “It’s possible (I can, you can, we can…etc.) to buy tickets there.”
  2. Zdes’ nel’zya naiti anglogovoryasheva cheloveka.
    Здесь нельзя найти англоговорящего человека.  
    “It’s impossible (I can’t, we can’t, you can’t…etc.) to find an English-speaking person here.”
